There are a few others who crosspost, not listed here, so watch the "to" part of the message when you reply.
If it's crossposted, forget it. Or reply only to your own group, delete the other newsgroups in the "to" part.
However, ironjustice does not like "his threads" interfered with.

    Newsgroups are public.
    Anyone can read your posts.
Be careful not to divulge private information (that can be harvested).
Some choose to post showing their real (full) name. Some prefer not because::
Remember that some search engines (combined with other bits of information, you may post from time to time) can find you, even show full address, phone number and a map to your door.

Unless your ISP forbids it, it is perfectly okay to "munge/spoof" your posting email address.
This also thwarts software which picks up email addresses, from newsgroups, for purposes of spamming you with unwanted emails to sell you something or request something from you.

Most newsreader software is set up in such a way, that one can do this. (munging/hiding your email address)
If you pick a posting name, be sure to add some letters or numbers with it, so one can differentiate (for example) one "mike" from another "mike" when posting on same newsgroup. (Examples mike2Z or mikeSoCal)
This would be your "displayed screen name" ; not the part before the @ in your email address.

Be creative! With the help of twisted minds, spambots are becoming cleverer. Many can decipher simple techniques of hiding your e-mail address.
It is not enough to just put NOSPAM in the part after the @ of your posting email address.
    Software can easily remove such.
So use anon.anon or anon.inv or invalid.anon or any variation of that (after the @)
Avoid using the special characters < > or () or "" as these delimiters will be ignored, resulting in spam in your inbox. Be sure to instruct people as to how to respond to you -- include instructions in your signature line as to how to respond. Don't include your real e-mail address there - spammers' robots will find it.
If you choose not to have a signature, if someone asks to email you, post cryptic instructions on how to unmunge your email address. Example: replace anon with comcast and replace inv with net

Read newsgroup posts for a few days. There's usually one or more helper types on a newsgroup who will help you sort out news reader settings. Get to know the posters first (by reading) before posting.
Make sure you read (and comply to) the newsgroup Charter or FAQ (if there is one).

You can also check the archives of the newsgroup
http://groups-beta.google.com/advanced_search?q=&Your posts are archived, whether you like it or not.
Even if you designate no archiving in your post, if someone replies to your post, your post has, at least, been partially archived.

By reading previous posts, that will tell you what is or isn't acceptable on any particular newsgroup.
If you type in FAQ or Charter, you'll see if the newsgroup has one.

Verify that your newsreader options for posting to a newsgroup are set to TEXT, and not set to HTML. Plain text means it's text only, with line length under 80 (preferably under 72) characters. See Configuring Mail Clients to Send Plain ASCII Text.

When starting an introductory post, make the subject line relevant. ("new here" or "help" doesn't do it).
Do not crosspost and when replying to a post, watch the "to" in the message to make sure your reply isn't crossposting (going to newsgroups that you don't wish it to). You can delete other newsgroups in the "to" part.

You can write (newsgroup posts) like the best of them.
Bottom post (put your reply at the bottom of the other's reply.
Keep the quoted text (and who wrote it - attributions) to which you are replying, delete out the rest, hit enter key twice, then start typing your reply. Reread (check for errors) before "sending".
This option (keeping quoted text) is available with Yahoo and is available if you are posting using Google.
Use the "reply" just below the date and newsgroup name (not the one at the bottom of the Google screen).
